But I’m a Cheerleader [Region 2] (1999)

But I'm a Cheerleader [Region 2]

Amazon.com
A promising comedy that goes awry all too early, But I’m a Cheerleader concerns a misunderstood high school kid (Natasha Lyonne) whose parents send her to a harsh, homosexual-rehabilitation camp despite a lack of evidence that she’s gay. Ruled with an iron fist by a fascist counselor (Cathy Moriarty), the clinic only drives Lyonne’s character toward an attraction to a rebellious tomboy (Clea DuVall), though screenwriter Brian Wayne Peterson and director Jamie Babbit are curiously intent on keeping the two apart and depriving the audience of other comic possibilities. Meanwhile, hoary clichés abound: prancing boys, butch gays, lipstick lesbians. Despite a fine cast full of young talent, and cameo appearances by Julie Delpy and RuPaul Charles, this attempt to skewer a present-day trend in “curing” homosexuals of their sexual preferences is flattened by stereotypes and unimaginative thinking. –Tom Keogh

Chutney Popcorn (1999)

Chutney Popcorn

Amazon.comChutney Popcorn takes up where quirky lesbian-themed comedy Go Fish left off. The twist? Reena (director Nisha Ganatra) is of Indian descent, but her girlfriend, Lisa (Law & Order’s Jill Hennessy), is not. This isn’t a problem in and of itself. Reena’s mother, however, views her daughter’s sexual orientation as a “disability” and describes Lisa as Reena’s “college roommate.” Then there’s Reena’s uptight sister, Sarita, who discovers she can’t conceive and draws even further away from her sibling. When Reena offers to be a surrogate, things just get worse. Lisa flees for fear that a baby will ruin her relationship with Reena, while Sarita changes her mind–but it’s too late: Reena is pregnant (via artificial insemination). There’s a happy ending, of course, but fortunately it isn’t too happy–you get the sense that Sarita still has a way to go before she can accept herself as fully as her unconventional, artistic sister. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

But I'm a Cheerleader

But I'm a Cheerleader

But I’m a Cheerleader was Babbit’s first feature film. It was inspired by an article about conversion therapy and her childhood familiarity with rehabilitation programs. She used the story of a young woman finding her sexual identity to explore the social construction of gender roles and heteronormativity. The costume and set design of the film highlighted these themes using artificial textures in intense blues and pinks.

Better Than Chocolate (1999)

Posted on 03 July 2009 by admin

better than chocolateMany lesbian movies are long on charm and short on production values; Better Than Chocolate has a solid dose of both and steamy sex scenes to boot. Our heroine Maggie (Karyn Dwyer), a clerk at a lesbian bookstore, meets footloose butch Kim (Christina Cox) and, after Kim’s van is towed away, they move in together. Unfortunately for their romantic bliss, Maggie’s mother, Lila (Wendy Crewson), and teenage brother move in that very evening thanks to Lila’s impending divorce. But what really complicates matters is that Maggie can’t bring herself to come out to her mother; even when she tries, Lila steamrolls through the conversation, like she knows what’s coming and doesn’t want to hear it. Interwoven with this is the struggle of Judy (Peter Outerbridge), a male-to-female transsexual who’s in love with the bookstore’s owner, Frances (Ann-Marie MacDonald), who’s freaking out because customs officers are holding a list of books at the border that they claim are obscen (more about Better Than Chocolate at Amazon)

“Just when you think you don’t like the Canadians, here’s something they can be proud of. This isn’t your average lesbian movie staged in the heart of San Francisco…”
Kate Bishop, Filmmonthly.com

“Better than Chocolate has everything: a very attractive cast, a diverse score, numerous subplots and a setting in Vancouver in the summertime…”
Richard von Busack, Metroactive.com
