The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love

Amazon.com essential video
This warm romantic comedy by newcomer Maria Maggenti is a gay coming-of-age story framed by Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Randy (Laurel Hillman) is a stoner, lesbian teenager who happens to be failing math and dating a married woman. One day, fellow student Evie (Nicole Parker) drives up to Randy’s gas station in a Range Rover and flips her world upside down. Evie is privileged and popular. Randy is poor, impulsive, and according to the other students, a freak. Opposites attract when the two girls kick off their friendship in detention. The flirtation blossoms after Evie introduces tomboyish Randy to the joys of Whitman and opera. Randy returns the favor by acquainting the sheltered Evie with the problems and delights of mature, taboo love. There is a beautiful scene where the two consummate their courtship on Evie’s birthday while Mom is out of town. The true test of their relationship occurs during the hilarious climax when angry families and (more…)

A Love To Keep Summary

Carmen Elias and Susi Sanchez star in director Juan Carlos Claver’s drama exploring Spain’s “social danger” laws through the story of two lesbian lovers whose relationship is marred by tragedy. As the film opens, middle-aged Elvira is saved from a suicide attempt and charged with the murder of her longtime lover Pilar. As Elvira’s memories come flooding back, the viewer is transported the early 1970s, when young teachers Elvira and Pilar first fell in love. When Pilar’s mother discovers that her daughter is involved in a lesbian relationship, she sends the frightened girl to an asylum where electroshock therapy is employed to “cure” her perversion.

The brave young woman vows to wait out her stay so she can one day be with Elvira again, but years of inhumane electroshock therapy and isolation take their toll, threatening what both once thought to be an unbreakable bond.

A Love To Keep Review

This movie is supposed to be based on a true story, which made parts of it even harder to watch. Scary that this took place in my lifetime. One woman was sent to a mental hospital given electroshock therapy for years to “cure” her of her lesbianism and her lover was threatened with arrest. But the love that they had for each other survived everything. And it’s convincingly portrayed. The acting by the two female leads is incredible…AfterEllen.com

looks beautiful and intense… and romantic!:-)

My Summer of Love (2004)

my summer of love

my summer of love

My Summer of Love is a 2004 British film directed by Pawel Pawlikowski and co-written by Pawel Pawlikowski and Michael Wynne. Based on a novel by Helen Cross, the film explores the relationship between two young women from different classes and backgrounds. Working class Mona (Press), whose once-hotheaded brother (Considine) became a born again Christian in prison, meets upper middle class Tamsin (Blunt) who suffers from a lack of love in her family. Filmed in West-Yorkshire, the film went on to win a BAFTA.

Reviews:
There’s a tantalizing touch of irony in the title My Summer of Love, since this superbly-acted relationship drama reveals much more than love between its curiously fascinating characters. As directed by Polish-born Pawel Pawlikowski (a veteran of British TV documentaries whose previous film was the praiseworthy Last Resort), this unconventional love story is an engrossing exercise in mood and psychology, set in a bleak but invitingly sunlit village in Yorkshire. It’s there that lonely, working-class teenager Mona (Nathalie Press) encounters rebellious rich-girl Tamsin (Emily Blunt), and their unlikely friendship grows intimate… but is it really love? Or is Tamsin (who was suspended from boarding school) merely indulging her clever penchant for emotional manipulation during a lazy summer of privilege? Mona’s born-again Christian brother (Paddy Considine) factors into the film’s languorous mood and complex emotional landscape; this is a film in which love and lo (more…)
